Create Unique Homes with Interesting Lighting

When it comes to lighting design, various types are out there for different parts of the home or office. You can beautify your home by installing different types of lights in different areas of your house. If you are a DIYer, experiment with different types of lights before taking your pick.

Most prominent lighting types are:

Ambient Lighting

Also known as general lighting, ambient lighting illuminates an entire room uniformly. This kind of lighting flattens the interior space and surprisingly, creates little to no shadow. It is called general lighting because it is the most widely used type of interior lighting. For example, a ceiling lamp, a wall sconce and Japanese paper shades found in local home décor stores are all ambient lights.

Accent Lighting

As the name suggests, accent lighting highlights a particular object or area of a room which could be anything from an architectural feature to a painting to a showpiece. This type of lighting is also called “highlighting”. Some examples of it include table lamps with opaque shades, halogen spotlights, and outdoor lights to highlight a pretty tree or a blooming plant or a fountain in the garden. These are often cool lamps that draw the attention to even a small object. You can find accent lighting in the form of track lighting or recessed lighting too.

Task Lighting

With such a self-describing name, it’s hard to imagine task lighting to do anything else but helping you concentrate on your reading, shaving, makeup, and/or cooking. Completely glare-free, good task lighting augments your visual clarity and prevents your eyes from feeling tired. Needless to say, this type of lighting is intended to illuminate a particular area of the home such as the kitchen counter, kitchen shelves and study tables or home/office worktables. Here’s a trivia about task lights – the source of the task light can never be seen. However, a task light must have a reflective shield.

You can create a beautiful effect of light by both ambient lighting and task lighting. Switch on both at the same time and you’ll see pools of light coming from different spots. This is very pleasing to the eye.

Any lighting can be used as an important part of living room designs, even sunlight and candlelight. So, those who are on a budget can try and create unique interplays of light and darkness with natural light. Since natural lights are never static, they are more interesting to work with. Unleash your creativity and there would be no limit to the interior design ideas you can achieve with natural light.
